Does anyone have any experience with higher level combat using spells from classes that haven't got specialization skills to boost them?

Take the Fire Mage, which has Fire Bolt, a spell that progresses at a certain rate, and which also has Fire Mastery, which gives a 10% boost per level. Once you get to the point where you're putting in 14 points or so per level up, you'll have 14 ranks in Fire Bolt, and 10 ranks in Fire Mastery, giving you twice the regular damage of Fire Bolt.

How do the classes without mastery skills compare, like the Warlock, the Necromancer, and the Healer? Do they scale faster? Do they eventually stop using those skills, and if so, what do they do?

I don't think they scale any differently.

Shadow Bolt (Warlock) is just there for Hybrids who lack something better. If you're a pure Conjuror, you'll want to be using Gloom Bolt or Lightning if you're going for Lightning Mastery too.

The raw elementalists get masteries. Pet and utility-type classes do not.

A Healing/Buff mastery would be cool on the Priest or Shaman though.
