My laserboat hit level 100 today. A very effective build.
I use a macro button on my g15 to fire my lasers so i dont have to keep bounding 5 different hotkeys at 0.75s intervals. Other than that no mods etc.

I started running level 100 sectors at level 85 ish.

And here comes the problem. I have 70+ level brunt, and i would really preffer to have additional slot for energy plant instead for missle, that are of limited use on higher level.

I wish there was an option to change the race for even a lot of money... running through 70+ level up with new ship would be so hard and time consuming only because of one slot to switch, yet making such big difference.

Ive tried most races, and i have to agree, the bonuses vary, but fringe is one of the best when it comes to slots simply because everyone needs a powerplant.

I picked Fringe too because of the bonuses as well.

At first I thought the one with missiles, but then I saw how the missiles suck because npcs ship speed cheat and the missiles explode and do turns and end up not doing any area of effect damage that you would expect them to do.

So, yeah, Fringe is the best.

ANything that gives structure, computer or helm sucks. Its all about engineer or tactics.

The plant is a heavy mod that you will always make use of. So yeah. Fringe is best one right there.

Beams is not viable till you reach leechers. Which will take a while. A lot while, mind you.

Fringe or not fringe is irrelevant, you still can put extra power in top heavy slot, losing one weapon. 5 lasers, 4 lasers, who gives? Also you not having a bonus of 1/2 less power usage from race slot, which is a shame.
