Hi,

I've been really enjoying the game but, man, would it just feel less "alone" if I could hire a henchman. Being a hero is great and all, but who in their right mind would delve into the depths alone? Please give those of us who would like this, an option.

During a quest where I had to fight through the dungeon with an NPC, the game suddenly made me smile a lot more. Sure, everyone won't like the idea, so that's why I'm suggesting at least the option for those who do. Thanks.

maybe the chance of hire outs in town, bt also a chance of wandering adventurers down in the cavern too, that you can team up with. Maybe if you can keep them alive long enough you can form a party out of them for that town.

Good idea and the mechanic is almost already there.

I ran into a quest last night that had me meet an NPC and then escort them 3 or 4 floors below. I enjoyed the opportunity to do so and the NPC was surprisingly very good at dispatching nearby monsters so it was a nice help. Only thing I didn't like was that they couldn't use the gates, only go from floor to floor.

The aforementioned quest was basically me assisting a henchman to get from point A to point B.

I really like the idea of being able to hire a henchman. Being able to adventure with a recruit in DoP was fun in itself, but also trying out different combos of characters was good fun too.

Would having a henchman make the game too easy though? I think that it probably might.

Perhaps we could have "Wandering Mercenaries" that periodically visit the town. You could contract them at the price of gold. The price would have to scale with level of course, but they might have restrictions such as only being able to stay for, say, 30 minutes or so. Perhaps they could ask to see your stash, and agree to fight with you only if you give them a valuable piece of equipment that they like! Or maybe something along the lines of "Yeah, I'll fight with you, but I'm broke and you'll need to supply me with a shield, cape and two-handed sword before I'll agree to it". Or how about, "Yeah, I'll help you out, but any legendary items we find down there are mine! You can keep the rest buddie"

Nah, I don't think henchies would make things too easy. All you have to do is make them hit for half what our character does. The henchmen's main goal is to provide some company to avoid that lonely feeling. It's why I think so many have replayed Diablo 2 a trillion times in 10 years. That one henchman/woman who fights alongside you. The game feels sooooo much better when you have an NPC tag along.

I agree with this. It would rock if someone could make a mod with an item or wandering vendor or something with a henchman type spell. In fact, I don't even need to equip him, just make it a random thing each time I use the spell. Would add a another element of fun to SP.

I second your idear its very good i will Attempt to make a mod for it using a human base ect with a weapon est time to finished 1-2 weeks (Shadow if u could make a base model be handy :D)

Well I was thinking about it too, and trying to produce a polished product would be interesting, plus I'm not UP on the code, and wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do once opening the .txt file. Ideally you would want someone who is hireable through an icon. With 'mini-inventory' like in Diablo 2.

After thinking about all of this, I decided it was way above me, and that I probably didn't have the time. That being said, I hope you do work on it! As I love the ideas of henchies. :)

I'm not that crazy about escort quests. I tend to rush to get those quests over with ASAP, despite the double exp gain (is that a bug?). If having a henchman was similar to an escort quest that doesn't have an end, I'm not sure I even want one.

I think this might be a great idea...if done correctly.

If you can get a random mix for what class they are....then you're talking about some interesting results and fun :D

The only thing is it would have to be like your char, 1 class+ 1 Class to make it interesting. It would almost be like fishing for a good merc. The only difference is that they do a third of the damage. Otherwise, the fighters and stealth rogues will mop up the place before you can do anything.

One more thing, Resurrection is vital. If you lose the guy or girl merc that's a big problem. Thus, resurrection is very needed.

That's all I've got to say...

I tried looking over the assets, but modding is beyond me.

I found the 'fledgling hero' section, and assume the NPC Escorts would be a good place to start. Now, how to make one spawn in whatever town you are in... and then change his dialogue options... that's a whole different beast. I don't have the knowledge to make this kind of thing work. Or how I SHOULD make it work.

Mainly because I'm not sure what the engine is capable of. I envision henchman working like a skeleton summon. But is Din's engine capable of allowing us to give them potions or items? Better yet would it be doable to give the player the option to outfit?

I think the best I can do, given the time, is whip up a copy of the escort NPC missions, which doesn't seem like a lot of fun. Maybe if you could change their behavor...

Just throwing some thoughts out, would be interested in how this would actually be done.

It's kinda crazy how games get modded. I know from playing a lot of modded games for the infinity engine (Baldurs gate 1 and 2). In the end, what the engine can do, determines what you can do. So...in the end you could be the best modder in the world, but be able to do nothing on certain things. The engine is truly the boss. Kindive crazy....

I like those ideas a lot since it would add an extra layer of depth than just giving a certain amount of gold for the henchman's service. Also having various wants would flesh out the personality of the henchman in it's own small way. The player may encounter a henchman with totally outrageous demands, yet he/she may be the only hero for hire in town and you could really use the help with that boss on dungeon level eight. Or the player might luck out one game and encounter a hero with very conservative demands and get their service for a steal (ex. offer to adventure for only 50 copper or willing to adventure if you kill three big pixie sisters on floor 1).

The hybrid system would be excellent for rolling up the occasional henchie to visit the town. :D

Have you guys played Dungeons and Dragons Online? The henchmen system in that game works by having different scrolls with you, one for several different types of henchmen. Say you are playing a warrior and need heals, bring along a priest henchie, or if you love to heal, hire a warrior etc. There are sooo many great possibilities to explore and all of the ideas in this topic have been excellent.

I play Diablo 2 to this day, a decade later, because of the henchmen. Sounds silly, I know, but I can't handle being alone in dungeons. lol.

I know that without henchman, I prally wouldnt have been to fight the ubers in d2. But this game and Kivi's Underworld, are both very different. Don't get me wrong, I will no doubt use a henchman in Din's Curse if it gets implemented. But....only if the odds against me are to the point where i can barely play. As it stands though, the problem with henchmen is that you've got to worry about them and yourself. And that, in my opinion drags you down a lot. In the end, solo is much more fun for me.
