View Full Version : 512x512 Font Textures

Hello guys, I'm trying to go into visuals modding a little bit by attempting to change the font appearing in the game. Maybe it's just me, but I was thinking Drox would have a little more of a techy-looking font rather than, as it stands right now, a sort of newspaper typeface.
I'm trying to convert this font:
I am, so far, successful in changing some parts of the interface but every time I attempt to convert a size above 22pt of aforementioned font, the FontGen program from the SDK gives me an error of being unable to fit more characters in the same texture file. This leads me to the big question: am I missing something in attempting to generate a 512x512 versions of the same font? I tried the 'buildTGAs' command and noticed that the textures directory has fonts in 256x256 textures and some also in 512x512.

FontGen defaults to 256 but you can change it to whatever you want with the textureSize parm.
Just do something like this:
fontgen name Gentium size 28 textureSize 512

Wow, thank you very much for the rapid response! The new font looks decent albeit its letters are a little too condensed to fit in some of the UI panes (although that's really the font's fault).
For anyone interested, I've added the file as a public download via my Dropbox. The font uses an SIL Open Font License (just like the defaults?) so no fear in their use.

(P.S. The forum's manage attachments button doesn't seem to be working on Chrome. Also, Drox Operative is an amazing game. This is THE hack-and-slash or, rather, shoot-and-loot space game.)

Thanks will try it out.

I've never tried this, but you could probably use a slightly smaller font size and it will fit better (replace Gentium12 with Orbitron11).

Looks like it could use a little more tweaking for fit. Once this is done, I think i'll give this Mod a Download! :)

Aside from some of the disparate UI elements left over from previous games (some buttons and screen navigation components) the lack of a futuristic font has been one of my only grumbles.
I've never modded any of Soldak's games, but if you get the character size to align with all of the UI elements, this may be my first download!

I tried reducing the size a bit more down to 11 while using the thickest-stroke version of the font. The text is definitely less likely to over-extend from the UI buttons and panes now but readability is becoming a slight issue, since some of the letters are far too small to have their strokes appear at this resolution. :o
I will try to experiment after I get back from work with other sizes - or perhaps just change the font to a narrower look-alike entirely. :D
P.S. I noted some strange misalignment on spots where letters appear right beside numbers.
