Hello everybody, I like this game and I played it for some days and found
out that Shadow faction is extremly overpowered. When they have enought time to expand there is nothing that can stop them. Its easy to win every galaxy if you are in alliance with them
and i lost 3x becasue they colonize planets like mad, and pumping ships every few seconds
Right now I was fighting in aliance with other 3 races and we had 50+ planets and 300+ ships. Shadows had 33 planets (alone) and 220 ships. After 20 minutes I destroyed 3 planets and 20 ships, then I looked on Shadow faction and they had 330 ships!!!!! From thin air they created/warped massive flotilla and are beating the F out of aliance of 3 races and my ship
And thats not first time that happened, I always try to destroy them on start but if they spawn on other side of galaxy I have no chance to kill them fast enought
So in short right now this game is about Shadows, if you join them its very easy game, if you fight against them its very hard game

P.S.
It will be nice if player can set/choose races they want on start

I'm sure this is a bug. I've been playing since around January but I don't have IotA yet. The problem you describe happens in the base game. Shadow develops and colonises like crazy, the the degree that they are utterly unstoppable. They never used to be like this (prior to last patch, if my memory serves).

For two sectors on the trot, Shadow expanded to the degree that they were advancing at about 1 tech level per minute and colonising planets faster than I could destroy them. They ended up with hundreds of ships and millions upon millions of credits. On the bright side, it gave me my first ever Economic Win, since they paid me a few million just to break some alliances :P

I think that can happen to the most of the races. With enough time and kuddeling monsters they can colonize and build ships on mass. And right, are you to slow, they build and colonize so fast that they can easily win the game maybe not kill the player but all other races.^^

And it's the question, is this right? A big imperium that have colonize so good, are they in the right to win the game so fast? i dont know the answer maybe yes maybe no.

No other race is expanding so fast. In that game I explained I pumped 50 000 into drakk and was fighting monsters/done lot of quests/escorted lot of colony ships and they were still no match for shadows
They just create somehow ships super fast and colonize even faster
And its also no bad luck, they done it in 3x in 5 games I played with them
once I killed them on start, second time monsters killed them somehow on start (probably boss ship and few other "orange" helpers)
and 3x they aggressively took whole galaxy without any ally

I first noticed this back when Shadow ships first got stealth. And I think that might be the root cause. If the colony ships are cloaked (I think they would be, but I can't be certain they are at the moment) and the monsters don't see them, then their colony ships are never destroyed, unlike the other races. This means no wasted resources, and an easier time actually getting the colony ships to the planet. Once they reach a certain point, the planets they have colonized provide them with enough resources to begin runaway expansion.

I think other races have the potential to reach this point (and do), but Shadow is able to get there faster due to the unique advantage stealth offers.

If I remember right, this used to be the case, but one of the Patches nerfed Shadow to remove the Cloaks from the Civilian Ships & weaken the Stealth Power of the Military Ships... despite this, I too notice the Shadow getting to the 'Runaway Power' point faster then other Races & i'm also at a loss as to how the Shadow make so much money so easily at times too, when it's supposed to be the Humans that are supposed to be the Race with the best money making power...

I've been noticing the same thing with the Shadows using the most recent patches. It has gotten to the point where I just make sure that I get an alliance with them as a basic bit of strategy. The one time I didn't do that recently (they were very far behind the Hive in that sector, as I recall), they ended up dominating the game to the point where I had to drop out of the sector. I did everything I could to kill them off with a moderately strong ship (not dominant, but good), but their colonization rate was so fast that I couldn't even keep pace.

I think their civilian ships are visible, but have invisible escort

When I see Shadow in a sector I generally destroy them ASAP before they take over everything. Sometimes I'll ally with them instead, but they have a knack for angering other races that I'm trying to ally with. Scavengers are the only other race that come close to consistently dominating sectors like Shadow do.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Shadow are still getting some big boost, but I haven't figured out what exactly it is yet. In one of my games they seemed to get a massive credits infusion, but I'm not positive what caused it.

Maybe the Shadow are cheating & hacking the Credits into the game at some point! :p

I've had this problem as well. In my current game in a level 32 medium-size sector, the Shadow are level 100, have over 300 million credits, over 90 planets and around 400 ships! At one point they advanced in technology level three times in one minute!

Shadow has about 150x as many ships as any other race. So many more planets, the colony ships just keep coming and coming. Reminds me the zerg from starcraft.

Now they really killed me (with massive doses of laught)
Shadows alone vs me and 5 races in aliance and they are winning! hahaha
they have tech 58 and I am on 26lvl, other races are still lvl25 ...I have no chance, again

As of v1.019 Shadow still seem broken. No other AI race can compete with them and, just as Geroj pointed out, all races can be at war with them and they still dominate. While I appreciate these recent attempts to balance them by toying with their mineral production, I suspect there is something broken more than just other AI races not dealing great with their stealth.

There must be some kind of exponential growth feedback loop hidden somewhere. In my last Shadow game on v1.018, I thought the bug might have been eradicated. Shadow and four other races all had about 17 planets and equal tech levels, for long enough that I thought they might finally be balanced.

Once they broke past having roughly 20 planets, however, the cycle began again. Massive, unstoppable expansion and swift advancement to lvl 100 Tech, probably due to their deluge of credits.

If the same thing is happening in v1.019, it sounds like their rebalancing is just changing the threshold at which they bust through the ceiling, not removing it.

The shadow are so devious, they reproduce in the source code.
