View Full Version : Request for input: Item description colouring

Hello modders,

I am contemplating writing a mod that will (hopefully) make it easier to quickly grok and compare items. In a nutshell I'd like too:

Add colour to item statistics (e.g. +10% fire resistance or 2-6 fire damage in red)
Reduce clutter by removing (or providing an option to remove) met dependencies (e.g. remove "requires 5 strength" from item description if character str >= 5)

First of all I'd like to ask for suggestions: what should be coloured and what shouldn't, and what colours should they be. The obvious ones seem to be red/blue/green/yellow for fire/cold/poison/lightening, and perhaps orange/purple for +item/+magic item, but what other stats will benefit from some colour?

Secondly I'd like to know whether this mod is feasible with the SDK. I have skimmed the UI docs and can't seem to find anyway way of conditionally performing an action? Apologies if I've missed something obvious. Unfortunately I don't have the game assets on hand to check in there.

edit: I've poked around the assets a bit now. Specifically Database/MagicModifiers and Database/Items. Am I correct in saying that this is part of the engine and therefore not modable? If this is the case then could I suggest adding the ability to mod this (a DisplayColour attribute on MagicModifiers items perhaps?).

Thanks

edit: ignore the thumbs down, I thought it was a question mark :o

A lot of this is inside the engine. You could do some of it though. For example you could find "Fire Resistance" in Loc/English/global.trn and change it to "^c001Fire Resistance^c145" and then every time that specific phrase is used it will display red. You can change color coding of other things in a similar manner. The first number is the color you want (which there is a table posted somewhere on the forums). That 2nd number is the "pop" color, basically saying stop using the the previous color command.

i have actually done a few color codings for the texts myself maybe later i'll upload the file

^c### - specifies a color for the following text
### is really a 3 digit number
the list of colors with corresponding numbers is below
145 is for pop (gets rid of the current color command)

^f### - specifics a font for the following text
### is really a 3 digit number
the list is below

^l000 - locks the commands
will ignore ^c and ^f for the rest of the text

$$Identifier$$ - specifies that this gets localized
will strip off the $$ stuff, find Identifier in one of the loc files (depends on current language)
and will insert in the real text
