View Full Version : Low FPS

04-02-2016, 03:41 PM
Hello there,

I enjoy playing Zombasite so far, but i barely get the game to run over 20 fps.
All settings at low, its playable, but it really cant understand this is even necessary.

My (relevant) PC-specs are:

- i5 2500K running (stable) at 4,5 ghz
- Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
- 8 GB RAM
- Game installed on Samsung SSD 850 EVO
- Win 8.1

I can run all games smoothly (including FarCry Primal, The Division, etc), literally this game is the first one to bring my pc down.

Any ideas ?

Im so glad i decided to leave my feedback for a game in development here, it really feels like it had a huge impact.

Is that a complaint that no one replied or did the optimizations in the last patch help?

Sadly i was just ranting. Ive started the game again with the latest patch, but fps is still in the low 20's. There has to be some problem with compatibility. My pc runs the division with 60+fps on max settings.

I was hoping I fixed your speed problems. :( It does seem like your computer should run the game way faster than that.

Some things you can try: update you graphics & sound drivers, turn off ATI tray tool's on-screen-display, turn off Triple buffering (graphics card setting), and if you are running the Evolve client turn it off.

04-24-2016, 02:33 PM
I did try all that, sadly to no effect.

The only thing i can say is that the whole performance issue seems to be wrapped around overworld terrain. When i jump into a dungeon i get ~60+ fps, even with alot of monsters around. Yet the second i leave and appear above surface, its back to 20-ish fps.

Anyways, thanks for your efforts ;)

I have a 970 with Windows 10 and the game runs fine. So I'm not sure that it's your video card, although it could be.

04-24-2016, 05:30 PM
mmmmmmm, Ive been hesitating with installing win10. The way it keeps telling me to upgrade for free doesnt raise my trust ;)

04-25-2016, 10:06 AM
Yeah, my main computer has a 970 in it, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The difference between the outside areas and dungeons is less lights, but more models with alpha. That's nothing a 970 shouldn't be able to handle well though.

You could try to turn down detail models and turn off plant movement. Oh, you can also try to reinstall the latest DirectX. While we don't use much DirectX, reinstalling has help some people fix stuff in the past.

I tried all sorts of ingame settings, highest / lowest etc. Guess ill give reinstalling directx a shot and report here afterwards ;)

I fired up Zombasite after a very very long hiatus. I think, the last time I played was 0.907 or something like that. And back then the overall framerate was above 60.
Now I have the same problem as the OP, as my FPS in the overworld lingers at about 25 and drops down to about 15 in fights. In dungeons its all buttery smooth again.
The only ingame option that gives me a slight increase of about 10 frames is turning off shadows.
I've attached a dxdiag.

From what ive just read on microsoft support websites it seems i cannot reinstall directx on Win 8.1. Its included, automatically updated and theres no way to either deinstall or reinstall it.

Can you both email me a save game where you are having the slowdown problem and also email me your user.cfg file?

04-26-2016, 01:13 PM
Here you go. The slowdown also happens on my two other chars (even a newly created one) also though.

04-26-2016, 02:43 PM
I dont even need to start a game to see the slowdown. It happens in the main menu already, when i click "options" my fps jumps to 150, as soon as i go back to the main menu (with the gameplay scenes running behind the menu) it drops to 20-30ish.

I cant find a user.cfg, do you mean the default.cfg ?

A speed up when you're only drawing the menus is normal.

user.cfg should be in C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Zombasite\User (I believe AppData is hidden).

Yes of course, i just said that to make clear that the fames in the menu arent capped.

And the Fps in the Main menu is nearly as low as ingame

Im not on my PC right now. Ill check for the file again tomorrow :)

Ok, it would be interesting to see how turning different things on/off changes the fps.

Pause the game so the fps stays as steady as possible. Write down the starting fps.

Then turn off the first console var below, write down the fps after it settles, turn it back on, and then go on to the next var.

drawModel 0
on the console will turn model drawing off, whereas
drawModel 1
will turn model drawing on.

I ran the above once in an outside area and within a dungeon. All graphic options were turned on/maxed out.

no changes - 28-30 fps
drawModel 0 - 63 fps
r_drawTiles 0 - 134-135 fps
drawUI 0 - 34-35fps
blendedTiles 0 - 32 fps

In dungeon:
no changes - 50-51 fps
drawModel 0 - 105-106 fps
r_drawTiles 0 - 63-64 fps
drawUI 0 - 48-49fps
blendedTiles 0 - 55-56 fps

I hope that helps.

04-27-2016, 11:57 AM
Just for completion's sake I did the whole thing again with all graphic options turned off/on lowest setting.

no changes - 45 fps
drawModel 0 - 61 fps
r_drawTiles 0 - 165-166 fps
drawUI 0 - 48 fps
blendedTiles 0 - 83 fps

In dungeon:
no changes - 106 fps
drawModel 0 - 148-149 fps
r_drawTiles 0 - 145-146 fps
drawUI 0 - 124-125 fps
blendedTiles 0 - 105-106 fps

04-27-2016, 12:55 PM
I got the user.cfg file, if you still need it please tell me your email adress :)

Erm, ive done the above tests as well, with the graphic settings on high (since changing them low / high has hardly any effect on fps for me) and my game paused while my char is standing on the overworld :

normal standing still = 27 fps
paused = 30 fps
drawmodel 0 = 45 fps
r_drawtiles 0 = 144 fps (166 fps with monitor sync off)
drawui 0 = 32 fps
blendedtiles 0 = 39

Ok, 2 more things to try.

At the console change r_checkGlErrors value to 0. Is that faster and if so by how much?

Also, can you guys try a smaller resolution and see how that affects things?

04-28-2016, 06:24 PM
Turning r_checkGlErrors off didn't affect performance at all and lowering the resolution from 1920*1080 to 1280*720 increased it by 3-4 frames.

05-01-2016, 11:05 AM
Same here.

05-02-2016, 05:53 PM
Did Friday's patch help any?

05-03-2016, 06:59 AM
Nope, no improvement I can notice. still about 25ish fps.

05-03-2016, 05:22 PM
I'm probably shooting in the dark, but I'll throw this out there. I remember certain games in my experience (very very few though..) that could possibly have rare bugs that would involve having fps issues with certain sound devices/drivers. Maybe something to try with sound or sound device disabled for anyone with this issue, just in case it's something screwy and not even directly CPU/Video related..

05-03-2016, 06:26 PM
I thought about that too, but didn't try it. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

05-04-2016, 04:24 AM
Okay. I did some testing. First of all, the game doesn't even start without/with deactivated sound devices. So I just turned the volume down ingame (don't think this has any effect on disabling anything), and also turned off the
"s_initSound" and "s_soundDevice" in the user.cfg.
Unfortunately I can't compare the results to the save-file I used originally, but it might be, that the FPS increased a bit to 30-35.
I'm waiting for the 0.931 patch now. I'm sure that'll speed up things.
