Today I'm going to talk a little about the subraces in Drox Operative just because I think they are kind of cool.

Subraces are usually a powerful, but very small group within one of the main races in Drox Operative. These subraces won't exist at all at the beginning of a new game, but can come about in various ways. Some just happen randomly due to evolution, some are created by their parent race in response to dangers, and some are just accidents. Because they are individually more powerful than an ordinary person of the race in question, they are often used for their talents and abused because they are different, but they are also generally feared. So it's not a huge surprise that when given a chance they rebel and are willing to die for their freedom.

Their rebellions can be very nasty affairs for both sides. The government is likely to quell the rebellion with deadly force and the subrace rebels will likely use their talents to gain their freedom. This of course is where the player comes in. You actually have a choice, which side do you help out? Do you help the oppressive government that you already have a relationship with or do you help out the dangerous rebels?

If the rebellion is successful, the subrace will become a fully functioning new race in your sector of the galaxy. This means they will start building ships, have a functioning economy, scout and colonize planets, and start diplomatic relationships with the other races. This will definitely be disruptive to the sector. There is now a new force to deal with, they are powerful, and they tend to be pissed off due to their mistreatment. This also means if they are ultimately successful, you better hope you backed them when they asked for help.

Let's walk through one example. The Shadow and the Dryad are at war. The Shadow are a sneaky race so they sabotage a nuclear reactor on one of the Dryad planets. This causes a huge radiation leak. The needed supplies to fix the leak don't get there in time and the leaking radiation contaminates a major water supply source. This contamination poisons many of the Dryad people, but instead of all of them dying some of them mutate. These mutants are very different from the typical Dryad people and are loathed. Even worse, when people find out they are also freakishly strong, they are feared. Fear and hate are dangerous things and the mutants are harassed, ridiculed, attacked, and many are even murdered. Soon the mutants rebel against this fear and hate. With the local Drox Operative ignoring the conflict, the mutants eventually win their freedom and take three of the Dryad planets as their own. The Shadow are happy because they split the Dryad empire in two, the Dryads took a major hit in power, and the Mutants are now a fully fledged race that are pissed at the Dryads, the Drox Operatives, and the galaxy in general.

Thoughts?

I like it!
More important I like that a subrace isn't into galaxy from start. Mutant subrace can destroy mother race like others, right?
What about mother race ships ? They will be "converted" automatically?

When I saw subraces I was hoping you developed a way for the game evolve where races will comingle and hybrid races develop - so perhaps a strong engineering race reproduces with a strong "magic" race. So perhaps the offspring can be tailored to both engineering and magic a bit.

No games really develop this idea. I would like to see the AI and NPCs grow and change. Sounds like you got a great start.

Once they are a full race they can go to war and kill any of the races, although the most angry with their parent race.

When they take some of the parent's planets at the beginning, they will also get all of the ships stationed there.

The game doesn't dynamically create random hybrid subraces, but there should be at least 1 hybrid race in there.

Can you recruit subrace crew members?

Right now you can't. It would cool if you can but might cause issues (many of them wouldn't be suitable and I would need to make them not spawn without the race existing).

Sounds really great Shadow. The more dynamism and activity the better, and it sounds like this adds all kinds of cool possibilities.

Another question: do you guys have an interface developed yet? If so, will we get to see the interface anytime soon?

What's in there right now is similar to DC but with different textures. I'm not sure it's going to stay like that though.

What exactly causes subrace quests to start or subraces to spawn? Can helping generic rebellions bring them out, or does it have to mention a specific group?

The only time I've run into them as full races is during the "Mutants" challenge sector.

The only other thing I can think of is an outbreak of asexual lithosoid that I stopped. Are they a subrace?

The asexual lithosoid is a subrace. If you hadn't stopped them, they might have broken free. :) That's generally how the subraces enter the game. The exception are the Talon, Legion, and Overlords that can appear by a monster destroying a planet.

Thanks, that makes sense then. I had thought if I provided weapons to freighters for any generic rebellion, a subrace just might magically appear. Good to know that its more a result of specific threats.

Is it possible to directly help subraces in the same way?

I didn't realize that's how those guys show up. Is there a log message that explains why they arrived?

As far as I can tell, providing weapons to generic rebellions DOES allow subraces to appear. It's a matter of chance, but aiding rebellions will increase the chance of it happening.

Helping a generic rebellion can lead to a rebel subrace. Usually on rebellion/civil war type of quests there is a quest available somewhere to help out the rebellion.

I found the freighter and got the weapons, but I couldn't deliver them to the planet. I was at war with the main race so I got cross-hairs instead of a delivery menu.

Yeah, that's something I need to find a good solution for.
