Shadow, are you planning on adding cube environment mapping to the engine for Drox? You'd only really need 6 textures that'll handle everything and it'd really make the ships' metallic look look much better.

If you do, please port it back to DC so the metals there can look reflective too :)

I'm not currently planning on doing cube mapping, although we do have some fairly simple specular mapping in there.

I think cube mapping is a fairly cheap and old school effect -- I remember games in the late 90s, including Half Life, had it. Even though it's simple, it really makes metallic surfaces look good because the texture on metal just doesn't look right until you simulate some reflection that moves as your viewpoint moves.

For Drox, you could just render a cube that has the current galactic background, so it's pretty simple.
