What about having modifiers that apply to individual star systems instead of the whole sector? Things like "safe" or "unsafe" or "ancient technology" or "lots of asteroids." Other people can probably think of better ones.

The main point is to make exploration more interesting, as the star systems feel pretty samey at the moment. This would also help further differentiate individual playthroughs, as system modifiers could be much more extreme than those of whole sectors.

Or better yet, have a specific set of system modifiers for even more diversification. And once again, asteroid fields/belts and nebulae.
