View Full Version : Defensive Fleets and Warfare in general

I've been playing .903 for a few hours now. Each patch is bringing great changes, but there are a few areas directly related to warfare that I'd like to see some changes in.

On Defense:

Defensive fleets currently sit at the system they are defending and shoot at approaching threats. The problem is they make no effort to chase down enemy threats nearby, and in addition, do not respond to being shot at by the player if the player remains outside their weapons range.

I can take out each escort guarding the planet one by one without them moving. Occasionally, they will be in range with their missiles and shoot back, but none of the other defenders respond as long as I remain outside of their range.

My recommendation would be to have these fleets patrol around the systems they are defending in some sort of circular pattern at the very least. If a threat attacks they should pursue, but only within a certain range of the planet.

On Offense:

The pace of warfare is quite slow as it stands now. I have been allied with the Utopians for quite a long time and they are now double the power rating of their closest competitor. All other races at war with the Utopians and each other. Still, the Utopians are very slow to attack enemy planets and have never once asked me to help them with war related functions.

I think the AI is currently being too conservative/reserved with its fleets. The Utopians have a ton of ships just sitting around their planets. Their corvettes could easily take out many of the enemies nearby. I would like to see them take more aggressive actions. I would also like for the player to be able to request their assistance taking out other planets.

On Warfare Diplomacy:

Currently, I am pestered quite often with "Break treaty with Utopians" requests from the less powerful races. I am at 0 relation with these races and 90+ with the Utopians. I have absolutely 0 reason to ever do this, but they (3 of them) continue to ask me. I have to check the flashing "Drox Operative" message on the right just in case the Utopians are wanting to offer me a couple of credits, but 9 times out of 10 it is a break treaty request. They don't even offer me any incentive.

On Ending Wars:

Is there any way to end a war without trying to bring relations up from 0 a few points at a time? As it stands, I can't see a way to defeat my current sector without hunting down all the planets owned by the remaining enemy races. Are there any changes planned in this area?

In the Negotiations menus you can offer a peace treaty. I've been able to do this for free in the past (even with races that despise me), but most races also accept a lump sum of precious credits for the treaty. It won't raise your reputation with them all that much, but it ends the war and allows you to trade at their planets again.

I definitely agree with this. Being able to launch coordinated attacks against mutual enemies would be awesome. Taking out specific planets could also lead to some serious stratagems. Which of their planets is making the most money? Which of their planets is least defended? Destroy!

I find that the defensive ships are just too damn dangerous. I ended up in a war against the humans and it took literally 6-8 attack runs to destroy a single destroyer. Two hits from one of them and my shields and armour were destroyed. The only way I would have had a hope of a sustained attack is a coordinated strike, as above.

I don't seem to be having heaps of trouble with the game (level 16, died 4 times), yet I have a hard time scratching one of these things. I ended up having to abandon the system because for every system I destroyed, they colonised five more.

for a Drox ship a densive ship is too strong in late game! And I think attack from far with missiles tecnique is a bug.. defensive ships even attack me :-/

+1 for patrol ships
+1 for attack a planet request from a race ..

another idea: if a race+player make 100% of power and another races together can fight, why not an alliance between all races against drox ? :D

Ha, the hilarious thing right now is I can be nearly allied with someone, full mutual protection pact, and have them declare war on me because they form an alliance with someone else who is at war with me. This sometimes triggers the 10:00 minute loss counter. I simply go back into the trade menu and ask for peace and then my mutual protection pact again. They of course accept as my reputation with them is still 70+.

I just finished my second sector (I've abandoned 4 or 5 now), but only because I forced myself to. As a level 21 ship, it would have been far more productive to simply abandon the sector and start a fresh one. I had to take 3 races out on my own. This required me to stock up on energy recharge consumable, armor repair consumables, and to purchase multiple warp gates. Then I had to fly through multiple systems, searching for enemy planets. Then I had to either stay out of range and repeatedly fire bombs at their planet/ships while using energy consumables, or go into range and fire bombs while using energy and armor consumables. Once destroyed, I flew around looking for the next system/planet that they owned.

All in all, the endgame for each sector is still suffering from tedium. My Cortex ally, who was far and away the strongest of the pack once I built them up, never made much of a move against them. The races in general do not seem aggressive enough and I have no way to influence them to attack.

My reward was a chest that admittedly had 1 neat legendary armor piece... that was weaker than what I was current using because it was too low level. Good for another ship I suppose. Anyway, this process took me several hours and cost me all the credits I made questing. I would have been far better off abandoning the sector, and this shouldn't be the case.
