View Full Version : How is dps calculated?

I get pretty different DPS numbers between the following two swords:

weapon 1:

12 to 26 dmg
1.0 speed
+3 min dmg
+3 max dmg
+5 to 9 cold dmg

listed at 19 dps on item, 37.0 dps when wielded

weapon 2:

15 to 25 dmg, 1.0 speed
+68% dmg

listed at 20 dps on item, 47 dps when wielded.

I had thought things like +68% dmg were already calculated into the numbers you saw, like armor. Are they added later for weapons? Or is it just that my sword mastery doesn't work on the 5 to 9 cold damage for the first weapon?

the cold damage might be it. that is pretty odd, though.

You can see how damage is calculated in the strategy section of our website, specifically here (http://www.soldak.com/Depths-of-Peril/Strategy/Tactics/Damage.html). In this case, some of the multipliers aren't going to effect the cold damage like strength and possibly sword mastery.

But DPS takes into account everything, right? So its still the best indicator of which weapon is best?

I don't think so. Since elemental damage is not effected by modifiers like strength your actual DPS could vary greatly depending on your character build.

Well DPS on your character screen is what you should care about. DPS on the weapon is before your character specific modifiers so it isn't always a good indicator of your final DPS.

Sorry, I was referring to DPS on the character screen, but didn't make that remotely clear...
