What is Drox Operative? (Video)

For those coming to this forum looking for answers, look no further! These videos give you a rough overview of what to expect. Of course not everything can be explained, it's a very deep game.

Very nice videos. BTW, did you mod the turn rate? It seems much faster than the default.

Nope, this is stock 904.

Interesting. What's your ships's speed in the video?

Depends on if you are referring to the first (SP vid) or second (MP vid). In the first, it's a stock, out of the box, Fringe ship. In the second it's a Drakk with 200 speed.

OK I was looking at the multiplayer video.

Looks like the turn rate is far too dependent on speed. I think turn rate should perhaps be constant, or it should be a separate stat (as I think eRaSer suggested).

Moonshine Fox 06-28-2012 05:57 PM

That might be true. It felt a lot like the ship got more maneuverable when I got more speed.

At the lower speeds, the ship turns so slowly that I don't want to turn back and pick stuff up.

I still find myself not turning back to pick up certain types of grey components. "Is it a weapon? No? Whatever then."

Single player overview is great. Will help a lot of new players. :)

Yes, I liked it a lot. We were considering putting a button on th main menu which would take the player to a video tutorial. I tried to make a video tutorial with Fraps, but my voice sounded like a boring economics teacher which would certainly put everyone to sleep. :( But we know this is a pretty complicated game for first time players, and it takes a bit to get you head around it at first. So seeing a video like yours will be helpful for new players as well as enjoyable to watch. :) Thanks for taking the time to create it.

And if you want to create some more... please do! :D

As you might not know, I was asked by Arcen Games (the makers of AI:War, A Valley Without Wind and Tidalis) to make the official tutorial videos for AI:War (you can find them here).

Since then, I've improved both my "acting" and my technical equipment (real studio microphone, puff filter, proper soundcard, more advanced recording gear) so you could expect something of significantly better quality.

Those videos above are, tbh, rather "lazily" done. It's just a "hop into the game, record while playing without script". If I'd do a proper tutorial, I'd make a script and take my time to re-record and cut out parts that don't work (a lot of "err":s and "umm":s for instance) and similar.

If you need anything like that, send me a PM with your ideas.

PixelLord 06-30-2012 09:49 AM

I'll definitely talk to Shadow about that ASAP. Thanks! :)

I approve of more videos. Watching these got me to make the jump to buy this game.

Moonshine Fox 07-04-2012 06:48 AM

I'll see what I can whip up. I might do something similar to "Let's Play" content on Drox, but I prefer to do this on non-beta titles with the glaring exception of Dwarf Fortress, which is perpetual pre-alpha :P

However, I'll wait a bit to see if Shadow wants any tutorials done by me. In that case, I'll refrain from flooding my channel with playthrough content just yet.

I think Drox has changed enough to warrant another overview video, so I'll be starting work on one of those as soon as I can. Will let you know when it's up.

Very cool! :D Love the way you make it fun to watch!

I am someone who likes to gather information on games and not buy into them blind. These videos were the final thing to convince me to get Drox Operative.

I think all of Soldak's games could use more exposure.

To be frank, this holds true for almost every indie developer.

That was the best part of your vids. You just jumped in and played the game and didn't make it a tutorial. Tutorials can be informative, but one never relates to them as well as videos where someone just sits back and plays the game the way they like to.

Just letting you know I'm still on this. It's just that I've tried recording twice and it was literally shit content :P Nothing I feel confident about putting on the Internet. I have standards. So it might be a while longer.

Personally, I think it's SO damn much harder to do something well like this that's scripted! Glad you have high standards. :)

Well true, it's not really hard to do it "live" so to speak, it's just that I was definitely not happy with the result. Lack of humor and cool things to show basically makes for rather trash content :P
