Invasion Mode Question

My wife and I, together with my two friends we always play with, finally beat the invasion mode, but to our surprise, we got no reward chest or any reward at all after trying for so many nights and hours of failure beforehand. I had mistakenly expected a town reward of a chest with better loot, etc. Now, we are not too excited to ever do it again with nothing in return given. Did we miss something? I still can't believe no reward was given save for experience.
Love the game, but this marked the first time we were unanimously disappointed.
