Default New ship in hardcore mode, which one?

I am little confused by which race to choose for hardcore. Logically the highest structure should be most survivable right?

And also, since I eventually want a flagship this leaves little room for points in other stats than command.
This hurts a lot when you dont have good crew since only one stat is raised with command. Any hints on how to progress?

The general consensus is that Fringe and Brunt (who both come with high-value heavy component slots; powerplant and missiles respectively) are the best races overall. I would argue that Fringe is the leader though. An additional heavy powerplant is eminently flexible, while a missile turret will never be anything but a missile turret (and since missiles can get hacked to fire *at you*, they tend to become a liability at the most inopportune times). Not a fan of the way Fringe ships look though.

Dryad's aren't too shabby FYI. I think their shield-charger is largely pointless (seriously? A minute percentile increase on an amount that's virtually non-existent?), but their built in auto-repair slot allows you to completely skunk power-hungry shields for armor (and a couple good ones can net you some really good repair rates too easily reaching up towards 2-3 armor per second). An added bonus is that they also rebuild structure damage when/if your armor does get destroyed. _addendum_ This advantage tends to be diminished later on as result of the next bit I'll dive into.

However, I've played a mid-level cortex ship and have found that the extra shield-booster component to be quite valuable. I loaded up as many small component slots as I could spare with them and it was hilarious how much damage it would take to eventually break through my shields. The battery slot is about the same as the Dryads shield-charger, ie mostly pointless (their racial stat is engineering so...they've already got high energy totals).

Thanks for the info. I was actually testing a shadow and the cloak seems invaluable to break aggro for hardcore.

Yeah I agree about the shield recharger. Seems like it should be nice but ends up being useless because of the low initial rates...

Anyway, Fringe is probably the best option as they get extra damage and energy, plus the powerplant spot.
